Evaporation depicted by the ECMWF reanalysis is less in the northern Indian Ocean and greater in the southern Indian and western Pacific Oceans as compared to the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis. Considering the differences in rainfall (above), moisture convergence over the northern Indian Ocean and southeast Asia must be stronger in the ECMWF reanalysis to balance larger values of P-E.
