CCM3 precipitation and evaporation amounts deviate substantially from both the reanalyses and satellite retrievals. Unrealistically strong near equatorial precipitation is evident over the Arabian Sea (as in the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis) and rainfall over the eastern Bay of Bengal and southeast Asia is too weak. P-E values are too large over much of the Arabian Sea and too small over southeast Asia. Also, over Indonesia and the western Pacific Ocean, positive P-E values associated with the ITCZ are confined too narrowly on the equator.
