The
Climate Machine: Volcanoes
Volcanoes inject large amounts of ash and reflective
soot into the stratosphere. Here Pinatubo is shown from 1991. The impact
can also be seen from satellite.
The impact by the soot on longwave radiation is small
compared to that in the solar spectrum.
Also, the residence time of soot in the stratosphere is
much longer (years) as compared to the residence time in the troposphere
(days).
