The Global Hydrologic Cycle: basic processes


Precipitation and clouds generally occur in regions where air is ascending and cooling.

Convergent motions due to the collisions of fronts, pressure induced convergence (with friction), or the presence of orography, can induce ascent of air. 

As air rises, it cools and eventually, the parcel becomes saturated with moisture (cool air can hold less moisture). Clouds and rainfall result.
