The Climate Machine: Energy from the Sun, part II


Fluctuations in the Sun's activity from year to year are associated with the sunspot cycle.
 

A movie showing the existence of sunspots can be seen here.

Sunspots themselves are darker than other areas of the Sun but they are typically surrounded by plages, which are brighter than the Sun and cover a larger area than the sunspots themselves.

There is some evidence that solar variability is related to climate shifts. We'll discuss this more later in the course.
