Sundogs

A halo (or sundog) is the area which surrounds a light source (sun or moon) that refracts light.  Sometimes a substantial  distance seperates the source from the halo depending on atmospheric conditions.

The sundog is caused by the refraction of sunlight through the ice crystals that make up the cirrostratus clouds.

The sundog is so-called because it appears to "follow" the sun like a dog.
