ATOC Winter Retreat

  • Snow Mountain Ranch
  • Lots of fun stuff to do before and after

Info

Each year ATOC hosts a winter retreat at Snow Mountain Ranch in Winter Park, CO open to ATOC faculty, staff, and graduate students. Grad students are invited to stay Friday and Saturday night at the nice, large house at Snow Mountain Ranch. We are planning Friday and Saturday night dinners and Saturday and Sunday morning breakfasts for faculty, staff, and grad students. Please see below for your meal responsibilities.

The Snow Mountain Ranch has stated that they require a two-night minimum reservation. The ATOC department has offered to fund one of the two nights, and we'll need to split the cost of the second night. The lodge where we've stayed costs $1449/night. Grad students, to pay please follow this link or please bring your $50 per person, cash or check made out to Ryan Neely.

Show up Friday and check out Sunday morning. It currently sounds like folks are planning on skiing at Winter Park both Saturday and Sunday, but if you would like to get a group together to do something else (see options below), please feel free to edit the wiki, become a contact person for that activity, and make some plans!

Your $50 per person to give to Ryan Neely. if you haven't followed this link

Your meal contribution food.

You are on your own for lunches.

Your own beer or liquor that you want to drink for the weekend. Group efforts on this end can be discussed.

Food And Cleanup

Students:

This year there will be four group meals: Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast. Lunches and snacks for the weekend are up to you. For simplicity each student will only be responsible for part of one meal. This way everyone will be able to relax and socialize during three of the four meals. All attendees have been assigned to one of the four food teams shown below. Two food captains have been assigned to each meal and will be responsible for the organization of that meal. Food captains will send out emails and communicate with their food groups independently. Please expect to receive an email from your food captains very soon to start planning your meals.

At the end of the Retreat, we need to make sure everything has been cleaned up. Therefore for an easier organisation, each food group will be responsible for cleaning a certain area on sunday morning before the check out time.

Faculty:

We would like to treat faculty members and their families to any meals that they will be present for. We encourage you to bring a dessert to share.

Directions / Check In / Check Out

Snow Mountain Ranch is 14 miles past the town of Winter Park. Here is a link to both driving directions and a map of the complex.

Check-in is between 3-6pm on Friday January 22nd.

Snow Mountain Ranch does not release the name or location of our cabin prior to the day of our arrival so you will need to stop at the front desk to check-in and find out which cabin we are in.

Check-out is 10am on Sunday January 24th

Fun Stuff

Downhill skiing

Plan ahead to meet up with your fellow ATOC friends who have season/4passes for discounted lift tickets if you need them.

The Winter Park website contains trail maps, rental info, lesson info, mountain events and much more. Check it out at http://www.skiwinterpark.com

Don't ski or ride, but want to go up to the Sunspot Lodge? Purchase the Zephyr Express Foot Pass. You can purchase the pass from the Balcony House ticket window fro $25 and it includes a $10 voucher for food or drinks at Sunspot. The earliest time you can go up is at 11:00 am and you must be down by 3:00 pm. You are not allowed to go up or down between 1 and 1:30 pm.

Tubing

Tubing at the Fraser Tubing Hill just past Winter Park. Pictures from another year

You will pay about $15 for an hour of hard-core downhill tubing complete with tow-rope. Wear your snow gear: snowpants and boots would be helpful but not entirely necessary, in fact ski goggles or sunglasses could be extremely useful.

Directions: Drive past Winter Park and Fraser. It is on County Road (CR) 72, just past the railroad underpass, west of Fraser. Turn off Hwy. 40 at the KFC/Taco Bell to get on CR 72. The Tubing Hill's phone number is 970-726-5954. (It's not as hard as it sounds, look for the Taco Bell!)

The YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch where we are staying also have their own tubing hill, check out this link for further information: [1]

Ice Skating

Admission is $3. Rent skates for $5 if you don't have your own. If you do have your own, bring them! The rink closes at 9:00 pm. Pictures from another year

Swimming

There is a swimming pool at the ranch: [map, see #23[2]]. Open swim hours are 6-9pm Friday and Saturday night, but call 970-887-2152 (4126) to confirm times.

Backcountry skiing

Interested parties may go backcountry skiing either Saturday or Sunday. There are numerous places to do some awesome backcountry skiing. To name a few: Current creek, 1st and 2nd creek, Berthoud pass and Butler Gulch are all along route 40 (the Winter park road). You will need beacon, shovel and probe, plus appropriate ski gear.

Cross country skiing

It appears YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch offers cross country ski rental and passes. See here for more information.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is yet another fun way to enjoy the great outdoors. Snow Mount Ranch offers a trail pass for snowshoeing and snowshoe rental(see here for information). However, there may well be other trails near by that cost nothing (for those accustom to the area feel free to correct this).

Contact: Donavan or Cassie Wheeler. If enough people wish to go out we will otherwise we may try out Cross Country skiing.

Ice Climbing

There are about 4 super easy (and short, ~30 feet tall) ice climbing routes in the Silver Plume area (south of Winter Park). Great location to practice the basics.

Yoga

Games

As mentioned, bring any games, cards, etc you think others might enjoy playing before or after everyone leaves to enjoy the great outdoors.

Name Game Description/Type
Tanya Phillips Settlers of Catan It's fun, you trade sheep for brick.  :-)

Fun Stuff - Who and What?

Put down your name and what you're interested in doing. This will hopefully help organize the events on Saturday and maybe Sunday if a lot of people choose to stick around Winter Park for awhile.
